Started watching "White Collar", new show.

In the opening episode they (FBI) find that someone has forged the new security strips for the Canadian $100 bill. So they tell us. Which leads the the comments:

"How upset were the Canadians?"
"Ohhh, Very. *shrug* Well as upset as Canadians can get."

Ahh the classic ever polite Canadian stereotype.

I prefer to go it alone, except for food. I really like it when someone makes me lunch and/or supper. I will go to work unless I feel completely under the weather, ie one step short of throwing up.

Watching "Destroyed in seconds" on Discovery, and some firefighters are burning down a building for training or something, missed the beginning of the clip. So they had spread some accelerants around the house, gasoline, kerosene, and diesel.

And then WAITED and let them soak into the wood. AND THE AIR.

When they go to start the fire by tossing a road flare into the house KA-BOOM.
less then a second and there is NO house left to speak of. No fire just a lovely fuel-air explosion.

You would think fire fighers would know something about mixing gas and air, or at least some one would have thought about that.

It did make for interesting TV though.

For those of you who don't read Slashdot Scientists have replaced spark plugs with a near infrared laser beam it cause ignition in an internal combustion engine.

The video is quite impressive as to the size of the "spark" produced by the laser.

People seem to be assuming that I got turned onto TVtrops via XKCD, and am just spamming the site linked.

That is not the case.

As proof see that I posted on Sunday night, where as XKCD posts on Monday. I actually had quite a shock when I got to the end of Mondays XKCD.

In actual fact I was looking for the Death Ray in Girl Genius, and got linked to the Tvtrops Death Ray page, and proceded to lose several hours of my life.

For quatch, are you sure the ray hits the moon? I only remember, and could only find, it hitting the mountain behind the tower.

It all started with a simple request: "Can you slice something for me?"

So I pulled out the trusty slicer similar to this,but no spiky bits only the blade, and started slicing.

Thought: I really should get the holder for this, ah one more slice, then it's done enough.
*slice*
Thought: PAIN.

I now have a nice dime sized slice out of my thumb.

Run up stairs wash, get gauze, can't find gauze, get tp, apply pressure.
Call telehealth (1-866-797-0000, good number to know), just to double check if I really needed to see someone, and they suggested yes, an urgent care/walk in clinic.
Unfortunately at that time of day it's closed, so a trip to the hospital. That didn't take too long (left home at 5:00 left ER at 7:00).

The worst part of the visit? having to show them the cut, as I had to keep ripping off the dressing. three times, once for the triage nurse, once for the doctor, once for the nurse applying the final dressing.

So now I have on my thumb a nice pressure bandage for 48h. that makes my thumb about 4cm wide and a at least 1cm longer then normal. And it doesn't hurt that much, it's more annoying then anything just the constant pressure.

And the really worst part of it all? I was slicing onions.

More proof that I am alive: "If I cut me, I do I not bleed?" Yes yes I do.

Star Trek

So I went out to see the new Star Trek Movie last night. From what had been said, and from the trailers I had high expectations. I'm sorry to say it didn't meet them.

It completely blew them out of the water.

The casting was great, all of the actors nailed there characters. As a fan I got many of the references that they made. But even if you're not a fan the jokes are funny the plot is great, and the acting is superb.

If you are a fan of Star Trek at all, go see the movie.
If you are a fan of Sci-fi at all go see the movie.
If you just like good movies in general, Go See This Movie.

Way back when I was first joining a BBS I was searching for a name, looking around for insperation, and my eye fell on a box of "Dysan" floppy disks, I though it sounded neat, and the name stuck. The 27 part comes from that was the lowest number that hotmail would give me, apprently 1 through 26 were taken. Since then usualy one of the two names was free on any site I joined.

I have a dead washing machine I need to move out of the basement to the curb, and its a bitch to move. Is anyone available Thursday afternoon/evening? I would really like at least two extra people (like I said a bitch to move). I can bribe with beer and pizza afterwards, and possibly movie entertainment.

for the love of all that is good and holy WHY???

I just watched "Dragon Wars" the trailers for it looked cool, the premise was interesting, the movie sucked.

Worse then "Dungeons and Dragons", possibly worse then D&D 2, though I haven't seen that.

Could some one please tell me why all dragon movies suck?

Can I have the last 2 hours back, pleeease?

So my week started off bad and progressively got worse.

So Sunday I get home and am told that my dad called and will be calling back. From the way Justine was acting I knew it wasn't good news, I steeled my self for news that something was wrong with one of my grand parents (both currently in a home). Which meant that I was blind sided when the news was "Your mom is in the hospital with a brain tumor, the biopsy to find out exactly what it is is on Wednesday."

Not wanting to miss work I made plans to go down on my week off, about 10 days later, as I knew there was lots of family coming down.

Tuesday my Dad called again, It's bad, it's inoperable, and you should get down here now. 8:45 PM we were on the red eye to Ottawa.

Visited with her on Wednesday morning, She was Ok, fairly lucid, around 1:00 she went down for her pre-op CATscan (meow) and then biopsy. Aftarwards she would be in recovery then the Observation ward and then back to a semi-private room.

A couple of hours after the Biopsy we had the 24-hour results (they rushed them), it was Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), also known as grade 4 astrocytoma. It's bad, its about as bad as you can get.

Thursday was rough as she was really slow coming out from the operation. If she was awake for 20 seconds that was a good moment. So for the most part we waited.

Friday, Saturday, were better as she was more lucid. Was talking, but sometimes getting mixed up with a few things. Though she was still sleeping most the time. By saturday she was eating again by herself and walking around. Though still tired.

The goal is to have her in home care for Monday but that is only happening if the pain management gets under control. As she is having severe headaches.

So yeah, I'm defintly not feeling too chipper right now. I will be headed back there Thurday some time.

Townhouse news

So we got the call today that we got a town house to rent. Yay!!!! the search is over.

I think the best reaction was from Justine. She was still in bed when the landlord called and so was sleepy. When he hung up I was expecting big smiles, but there was nothing.

When she got I said, "Come on, smile we got the townhouse." Nothing. Grumpy looking face and a forced smile.

About 10 minutes later she comes bouncing into the kitchen all smiles and giggles. I turn expectantly and she says "we're moving into a townhouse, its finally sunk in."

Yay, we're moving into a townhouse.

Lowering your voice

At Max's party last night Eric, was talking about a denser then air gas that would lower you voice. The gas is "Sulphur Hexafluoride", and is extreamly non-reactive.

So I was surfing Wikpedia and ran across this picture in the article on broadsides, and had to share the neatness of the shot. My first thought was "look at that shock wave. Then I realized the water was actually depressed.

Also, here is a cool video of an explosion at a rocket fuel plant. I love the fact that you can see the shock wave on the ground. Here's an article on the actual incident.
